Skills of a modern woman

I came across an article the other day on The Huffington Post (probably my favourite news site) which had a list of skills that they reckon every modern woman should have. I love lists like this so wanted to test myself and see which skills I’ve got, and which ones I perhaps need to work on. Here’s my results:
1)   Make at least one great cocktail – I can’t check this one off as I never make cocktails myself (unless vodka and orange counts..?). If I was going to learn one to make though it would be the Mojito, they’re my favourite!
2)   Drink without getting a hangover the next morning – Concerned that the first two are about alcohol. But I can definitely do this. I don’t drink very often these days and being sensible about it when I do is pretty easy.
3)   Look good in a photo – I think from shoulders up is ok but I don’t think I’ve mastered how to look good in a full-body photo just yet.
4)   Remove unwanted body hair the most effective, painless and affordable way possible – While I haven’t tried all ways of removing hair, my methods are fine, thanks.
5)   Dump someone gracefully – Haven’t mastered this one as haven’t had to do it!
6)   Write a sincere thank you note – I don’t know the last time I wrote a thank you note but with a career in writing I’d hope I would be able to do this!
7)   Set a table – Yes I can do this. Growing up and having to set the table plus having to set hundreds of tables through hospo work has given me this skill.
8)   Open a bottle of champagne – Again, working in hospo I’ve done this sooooo many times.
9)   Send a group email – Yes.
10) Dress for your body type – I don’t know if I have this skill because I don’t really tend to think about my body type when I’m shopping. I just sort of go with what I like and think looks good. I may well be doing myself a disservice, who knows.
11) Graciously offer assistance to someone in need – Yes.
12) Book a vacation – As of last year, yes!
13) Hide a bad hair day – Put it up in a slick bun? Yes.
14) Find the best deal – For sure. I’m all about looking online to see if I can find something cheaper than in store.
15) Write a cover letter – Yep, you get really good at this when you’re applying for jobs after uni.
16) Hold a baby – Support its head, right? Haha I think I know the right way…
17) Wrap a gift someone would be excited to open – I don’t tend to care too much about wrapping presents beyond the basic (my sister is really good at making them look amazing) so maybe I should start making more effort?
18) Start a conversation – Just ask people about themselves. I used to be soooo shy but I now know how to converse confidently. I’d say my job has helped me a lot in this respect.
19) End a conversation – Yeah I get pretty good at this through my job too. Often I’ve only good the car booked for an hour and a person I’m interviewing will be rabbiting on and on and on and I have to stop them.
20) Pack everything needed for a weekend getaway in one small bag – I suuuuck at packing and always overpack! But I often go somewhere for the weekend and just take one bag with me so I think I can tick this one off.
21) Ask someone out – I have done this only with people I already know. I have never asked out someone I’ve just met though. I don’t think I have the courage for that!
22) Invest her money – Ummmm….
23) Use Google maps or some other 21st century version of direction giving – I use Google maps a lot! I’ve had to go and meet lots of people at random addresses for work which I wouldn’t have a clue where they were if it weren’t for Google! Also have turned to maps on my phone when I’m out and about and get lost. Best invention ever.
24) Pack her purse with essentials – I don’t carry a purse. I’m more of a satchel girl. But I always have what I need so yes to this one.
25) Prepare a tasty and healthy dinner for herself and at least one guest – Yes. I used to cook dinner at home for my family fairly often and used to cook for a flat of 5 so definitely can do this.
26) Edit, upload and print photos – Yes.
27) Perform CPR – Did it in high school but haven’t since. However I am booked in for a course through work soon!
28) Choose a ripe fruit – Yes. I know my fruit.
29) Cook and carve a chicken – Can do the cooking but not proficient at carving. I just hack in to cooked chickens haha.
30) Google her date – Absolutely.
31) Negotiate a salary and/or pay rise – Haven’t had to do this so nope I don’t have this skill.
32) Bite her tongue when it’s appropriate to – I’d say I’m too good at this and often don’t say what I’m thinking when it wouldn’t hurt to do so.
33) Get a passport – Yes.
34) Reserve a library book online – Yes.
35) Leave reviews online – Yes.
36) Find the right bra – I think so?
37) Welcome a new neighbor or coworker – Yes.
38) Assemble furniture – Pfft, no. This is what boys are for.
39) Find a reputable repair person – Yes.
40) Give a sincere apology – I find this a lot easier to do in writing rather than in person.
41) Change a tire – Wouldn’t have a clue how. That’s why it’s good to have guy mates.
42) Give herself a breast exam – No idea.
43) Ask for help when she needs it – Yes.
Evidently there are a few things I need to work on! But overall I think I’ve got a few skills under my belt. I think most 22 year old women would probably have most of these skills though, don’t you?
I didn't know what pic to post to accompany this and since I've been so absent on here I figure maybe showing you who I am again is a good idea. This is me:

Bucket List

Almost two months without blogging. My bad. It's not that I haven't had the time, it's that I haven't had the motivation. But I have returned, don't fret!

The other day at work I was bored so I decided to write my bucket list. I haven't written one before and I feel like my one sounds awfully generic, but OH WELL. Here it is:

Bucket List
  •     Visit all the structures I studied in Classics at High School (Colosseum, Acropolis, Athena Nike, Hadrian’s Column, Arch of Titus, Arch of Constantine etc)
  •     Get visible abs (even if it’s just for a week! I should probably work towards this when I’m younger, aka now, when my body is more likely to allow this to happen).
  •     Go to the airport, pick a number, count down the flight board that amount and take a plane there (I’m all about being organized so this would be a complete thrill for me).
  •     Try Crossfit (I want to see just how hard I can push myself physically)
  •     Get a wrist tattoo
  •     Work for a nonprofit organization
  •     Run a half marathon (or a full one, even better!)
  •     Buy a house
  •     Own a dog
  •     Skydive
  •     Bungee jump
  •     Swim with dolphins
  •     Write a book
  •     Donate blood
  •     Take a hot air balloon ride
  •     Go zorbing
  •     Get a second degree (I kinda wanna do something in nutrition)
  •     Join the army (I’ve been interested in this for a while now, it would be a massive challenge but I think the benefits would be great).
  •     Get married
  •     Live in a country where I’m forced to become fluent in the local language
  •     Travel on my own (to test how well I could do without anyone to rely on).
  •     Be a bridesmaid
  •     Go to a massive music festival (Tomorrowland/Glastonbury/Coachella/Summerfest)
  •     Go to a huge baseball/basketball/gridiron game in the USA and an EPL game in England.
  •     Go to the Rugby World Cup final.

Things I have already done that would have been on my bucket list:
-          Get a tattoo (I have the deathly hallows on my ribs)
-          Go ziplining
-          Ride an elephant
-          Get lost in a foreign country
-          Pat a tiger (I actually went further and hugged a tiger)
And of course travel the world! Countries I want to visit include Italy, France, England, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Portugal, Peru, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Iceland, Poland, Switzerland, Denmark, Hungary, Spain, Sweden, Greece, Turkey, Morocco, Zambia, Kenya, Egypt, South Africa, China, India, Russia, USA, Canada, Paraguay, Ukraine, Bora Bora, The Maldives, New Caledonia....basically the whole world.

Hair chalk

So I'm one of those people who gets bored with my hair pretty easily. I currently have shoulder length blonde hair (after a lengthly process of going back to blonde from black) and I want a change! My amazing hairdresser would probably shoot me if I went dark again after all her hard work, so I'm thinking of dipping into some hair chalk experimentation.
I love the subtle, colourful ombre that hair chalk can create, as shown in the pics below...

^^ I love this last look, and her hair colour and length is similar to mine so I'm excited to try it out!

Wellness Challenge

I saw on Here Comes the Sun, my all-time favourite blog, that she is engaging in a 30 day wellness challenge thingy majig. And I desperately need a detox myself so I'm going to give it a go! I figure that if I blog about my progress it will (hopefully) keep me motivated and accountable!!

Here are my goals:

  • Severely cut down my sugar intake (sugar is my weakness, it's truely terrible)
  • Drink more water
  • Gym 4-5x per week
  • Severely up my fruit and vege intake!
  • Eat breakfast everyday

^^ YUM!!

One magical night

On the 8th of December it was the 21st of one of my nearest and dearest friends. A group of about 20 of us went out for a meal at Lonestar in Napier and then went back to her place for dessert and drinks. My amazing friend had completely decked out the backyard with a gazebo, fairy lights, candles and other lovely things so that the effect was a magical wonderland of sorts. It was just beautiful. The dessert was fantastic too - cream puffs, jelly slice, cheesecake, strawberries, whoopie pies, mini pavlovas...!! It was the most wonderful night. Great food, great music and great company. Unfortunately I didn't get too many photos of the setup but here are some that give you a rough idea (though they don't really do it justice):

^^and one of the cool kids couch ;)
I believe that Jess got a few ideas for decorations from pinterest. Definitely a source of inspiration if you have any events coming up!!

People I wish were my friends

Jamie Oliver - Seems like such a chilled, down to earth guy, with a heart of gold. Not to mention his amazing culinary talents. Like honestly, imagine going to a dinner party at his place...(drools)...!

Johnny Depp - Do I really need to explain this one? He is pretty much the epitome of cool, and he is an amazing musician and quite a looker too. Can just imagine he would be an awesome person to chill with outside on the deck in the sun with a cold beverage, jamming his guitar.

Zooey Deschanel - Quirky and a complete babe, if she's anything like her character on New Girl she would be one fun chick to hang with. I imagine she would be the kind of friend to do girly things like baking or crafts with. Or go antiquing with.

Stephen Fry - Wittiness is something that I really admire (and wish I had more of), and this guy is pretty much the ultimate master. Hopefully being his friend would mean some of his incredible intellect would rub off on me....!

Jack Tame - This TVNZ journalist seems like such a cool dude. He's so passionate about what he does and mega talented at it too. I imagine him being a friend that you could have deep and meaningfuls with about current events yet still go out with for a dance.

George Orwell - I admire the mind of this man greatly. Through his novels you can see he has some pretty strong beliefs, and I just imagine a conversation with him would be stimulating and thought-provoking.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt - Pretty much think this guy is amazing. He's an incredibly talented actor, a good singer and super cute! I reckon he seems like a guy you could watch chick flicks with, and he would actually enjoy them, and would enjoy walks around pretty gardens and stuff like that. Not saying that he's really girly, but he comes across as a guy who would enjoy and appreciate the simple things in life.

Atticus Finch - An emblem of unwavering morality and goodness, who wouldn't want Atticus Finch as a friend! He would be the type of friend you'd go to for life advice, the type of friend that everyone needs.

Quite an eclectic group of people aye! Funny that there's only one female in there too.
Who do you think would be a cool friend? Fictional characters allowed ;)

Mr Pilger

At uni this year I've come across a few figures that I've come to have massive amounts of respect and admiration for. Jane Austen is one, who I blogged about here, but the newest addition to my list of inspiring figures is John Pilger. Though he has been around for a long time, it is only recently that I've actually read and researched his work. A paper I'm doing this semester uses his book Tell me no lies as its set textbook so I'm learning quite a bit about his career.

As someone studying Journalism, he is the ultimate. His investigative reporting focuses on foreign policy and has covered Cambodia, Australia, East Timor, Palestine, Diego Garcia, the USA and numerous other nations. In a class last semester we watched a snippet of his doco Stealing a Nation about Diego Garcia. It struck a chord with me for some reason and got me interested in his work. Youtube it if you want to see an example of shocking injustice that has slipped by relatively under the radar.

I also like that Pilger uses the quote by George Orwell regarding how censorship in free societies is infinitely more sophisticated and thorough than in dictatorships because "unpopular ideas can be silenced and inconvenient facts kept dark, without any need for an official ban" as inspiration for his work. His dedication to exposing injustices is remarkable and I have the utmost admiration for him.

I salute you, Mr Pilger

The mundane

Pretty mundane life here atm: wake up, uni work, uni, uni work, dinner, bit of tv, uni work, sleep. Repeat. The only differences are the gym and work. It's getting pretty stressful here atm as assignments are coming at me (bro) left right and centre. Buuuut slow and steady, taking each day as it comes is what I'm focusing on for the moment.
Something I stumbled upon today..

Talk about timely.
Also, it's grad week at Massey this week, so lots of pretty girls and boys around campus in their robes. YUSS that'll be me next year!! Woop!

Booyah.

Yuss, second A for the week! Stoking right about now :)
This one was for the essay I wrote (and previously blogged about writing) about The Stepford Wives and its gender representation and ideologies. I found this essay easy to write, because I felt passionate about the subject matter. Hmmm....thinking I'm a feminist? Not the bra-burning, man-hating type though...just in some ideas and beliefs I have.

If you haven't seen the original Stepford Wives, I fully recommend it. Such a good movie, despite it being pretty old. And Joanna and Bobby have mean style. Here's the trailer..

And you can actually watch the whole movie on Youtube.
Watched a documentary called 'Color Adjustment' (yes I do know how to spell, that's just the true title) yesterday and discussed it in class today. Again, so interesting! The material in this paper is really making me think about important issues (this time how the media treats colour), and I'm absolutely loving it!
I think the media industry is definitely in my future...
hope y'all have had a brill day :)

Miss Austen

So today I finished and handed in my final assignment for this half of the semester. It was a 2000 word essay discussing the representation and ideologies relating to gender in the 1975 film The Stepford Wives (a movie exponentially better than its remake). To sum up my argument: the film critiques patriarchy and the ideology of female domesticity...blah blah blah...men suck.

Reading so much feminist rhetoric lately has actually been really interesting and has made me come to terms with my own views. Something that stuck out to me was a quote that I came across:
"Pictures of perfection make me sick and wicked" - Jane Austen (1817)
This stuck out to me not only because I love Jane Austen's works, but also because it shows how she had to contend with unrealistic media images even back in her time, and that she's not afraid to articulate how such images made her feel.
And on the subject of Jane Austen quotes....
"I believe I drank too much wine last night at Hurstbourne; I know not how else to account for the shaking of my hand to-day. You will kindly make allowance therefore for any indistinctness of writing, by attributing it to this venial error." - Jane Austen (1800)
^^ This quote of hers makes me laugh.
"My idea of good company is the company of clever, well-informed people who have a great deal of conversation; that is what I call good company" - Jane Austen (1816)
Agreeeeeeeeed!! This quote makes me like her even morebet she woulda been a freakn cool chick. My theory is that Elizabeth Bennett from Pride & Prejudice is based on Austen herself, as reading through her quotes gives a real impression of the type of person she was; witty, independent, headstrong (Just like Lizzie).

Thank you, Miss Austen, for your legacy. I admire you greatly.

Something different

Some things I did that were different from the norm today...

  • Had my hair french braided like ten times (am being a hair model for a friend studying Hairdressing)
  • Lunch date with the aforementioned friend. Delish. Oh how I've missed you sushi.
  • Eyelash tint date with the aforementioned friend.
  • Had insanely stinging eyes from the dye from the eyelash tint date with the aforementioned friend.
  • Different exercises at today's pump class.
  • Chatted to a guy who shared my name.
  • Skyped a mate living in Christchurch.
  • Bought flights online! Wooooooooooop!
  • Got a parking ticket :(
It's nice to do different things every now and then. Shake things up a lil. Oh and I've been getting into tumblr again a bit lately, check it out at putflowersinthemud.tumblr.com
On a side note, as I bought flights today I was thinking of how it's gonna be so amazing when I book my flights to Europe in a couple of years. I cannot wait to go overseas. I can't wait to...

A song to soothe

I think I may possibly have found the most soothing song ever. After hearing it in a friend's car and immediately loving it, I bought it and have been playing it pretty much every night before I go to sleep ever since. It's so lovely and relaxing.

It makes me think of Asia, as the music is sorta like the music in Memoirs of a Geisha and Mulan
This song just makes me drift and dreeeeeeeeeeeeeeam...
What do you think?

New Beginnings

I am becoming slacker and slacker at blogging, and I do apologise. But in my defence, the only computer I can use is ridiculously slow and I am hardly ever home to post. I hope y'all had a great christmas and new year. I saw the new year in with a new friend (a person I clicked with immediately, which doesn't happen too often and thus was very cool), one of my oldest friends, two male specimens and another girl I hadn't met before. It involved lots of dancing and a veeeeeeeeeeery late bedtime of 6:15am. But it was totes worth it :) Since then, I've been working and seeing friends. Oh and my friend and I found an awesome flat for next year too which is exciting!

Seeing as it's a new year and all, I have a few resolutions I want to see through this year, which are...
  • Do really well academically seeing as it's my final (and most important!) year
  • Get into the habit of eating really healthily. Three meals a day, everyday. Had a mean convo with a close friend about this the other day, and there are things that can defs be improved. Here's to making this year the one where I finally kick those unhealthy habits!
  • Keep up regular exercise.
  • Be more social, and make more friends!
  • Become more self-confident....somehow...
  • Go to more gigs!
  • Blog more! And maybe get to 10 followers? Tehehe
So these are pretty generic and boring, but they're the ones that I really want to improve on. And finally, I want to keep this in mind (as I tend to care about looks and be superficial way too much, bad ae..!).....................

Inspiration

Into the study here, with exams beginning next week :o very much not keen for them again. Being cooped up inside all day going over lectures is not what I'd like to be doing with my time, but I really want to do well in exams so I gotta put the effort in. Just watched that 'take this lollipop' thing on facebook, have you seen it? It is sooooo creepy!! I was home alone when I watched it too, which was not ideal.
On my study breaks today I cleaned the house. lol. It was actually a nice way to get away from the desk!
Now that I'm pretty much done with studying for today (I tend to do it all day then take the night off, until exams are really close anyway), I want to share some of the pictures that have been inspiring me lately..

Also, I am feeling happy atm because I just did my eyebrows and they look good :)
hope you've had a good day
