So, 2014 aye

So 2014 huh. The year of slack blogging. This is only my 19th post this year and for that I am somewhat ashamed. I love blogging, and there have been plenty of things going on that I could have blogged about. I think it’s partly because my job involves writing. So I’m writing all day and don’t really feel like it when I get home.
I have kept a record of every book I’ve read each year since my first year at high school (when I used to read 100+ books  a year – yes I was a book nerd!) and the other day I counted the amount of books I’ve read this year and it was only 11. I was less than impressed with myself so I set myself a goal of reading at least one more so I would get to 12 which equates to one a month. That’s still not very good but I can live with it.
è I’m currently reading Eat Pray Love. It’s excellent. I’ve already got massive wanderlust and this book just feeds that. It’s about a lady who leaves her monotonous life and spends a year travelling Italy, India and Indonesia on her own. It’s such a delicious book.
è Before that I read Pig Island by Mo Hayder. Also excellent. A thriller unlike I’ve ever read before and the entire time I was reading this book I was thinking ‘gosh this would make a good movie!’
Part of the reason that I’ve become so slack at reading is because of the number of excellent television shows these days. Once I find a show that I like, I’ll stream an episode with my dinner every night and then usually watch at least one more episode during the night. This year I’ve made my way through Pretty Little Liars (guilty pleasure – it’s pretty stupid), Luther and White Collar and just this week discovered an absolute gem – How to get away with Murder. Hnnnng this show is fantastic. I love legal dramas (Suits is one of my great loves) so this immediately appealed to me and BY GOLLY it’s good. I’m a little sad though because it’s only in season 1 and only has 9 episodes, which I’ve finished. I also flirted with Teen Wolf this year but got over that after a few seasons. Next up I want to try True Detective, Vikings, Gotham and finally get into Community.
In other news, I’m moving to England next year. I’ve just started the process of getting my working VISA and then I’m applying for a live-in pub job through the London Pub Company. My aim is to do that for 4 months then look for a job relevant to my field. While I’m over there I want to see Europe too. I’m doing this on my own which is scary but I think it will be good for me. I’m going to be forced to make friends and rely on my own resourcefulness.
I’m going to take my time getting to England before I start my job and stop in LA, New York and Reykjavik on my way over. I’m so very excited. It’s going to be epic. I may love it or hate it but I won’t know until I try!
I’m looking forward to the Christmas break! Spending time with friends and family, good food, sitting in the sun with a good book and just relaxing will be so therapeutic. I’ll be in Hawke’s Bay and Hamilton for my break – hopefully the weather is good so time can be spent outdoors.
Bye for now xx

Nostalgia part 1

Don’t ask me why, but I was all nostalgic at work today.
Growing up, I had a great love for books. My parents would take me to the Hastings library every week or so and I’d always come away with a huge stack of books for the week. I’d read hundreds a year. It was my favourite hobby. When I was really young I would be involved in the school holiday reading programs and try to read as many books as I could so my reading list would look impressive. There were the particular sections I would make a beeline for when I got inside the library – first the recent returns then the mystery sections and the places where my favourite authors lived. As I grew up I migrated to the young adults section which was at the other end of the library, and discovered all the treasures there. At high school I would delve into the adults section every now and then, but the young adults was where I found most of my gems.
I loved staring at the spines of the books and wondering what sort of world each book contained. I could spend hours there and would often park myself in a window seat and flick through a cook book or travel book and look at all the lovely pictures. I made myself wait till I was on my bed or the couch at home before I let myself enter the world of the novels.
Sadly, I don’t read nearly as much as I used to. I blame the internet for this. Growing up we had one computer in the house, and didn’t get the internet until I was in high school. In my current flat, we each have our own computer and 500GB of wireless internet each month.
I also blame university. As soon as I hit uni, my leisure reading almost dropped off completely. Each week there were so many assigned readings to complete as well as assignments, lectures and tutorials to attend (plus a social life) that leisure reading kind of fell by the wayside. I never lost my yearning for it though, and since I’ve finished study and started working, my reading has picked up a fair bit.
I just finished The Book Thief (brilliant) and pretty much done with Divergent too (also brilliant). Then I’m moving on to Gone Girl and then The Code of the Woosters. I have them all lined up and can’t wait to get lost in them.
While it makes me happy that leisure reading is a priority for me again, I do think it’s sad that I don’t visit the library anymore. I tend to stockpile books from book sales these days, or buy them online instead of going to the library. But if I ever have kids, I want to take them to the library every week just like my parents took me. I‘m going to make my kids love books, they aren’t going to have a choice hahahahaaahahamwahahaha ;)

Yo!

Okay okay sorry for not blogging in quite some time. I definitely want to keep the habit up, and will endeavour to do so, but I have just been lacking in motivation a bit. So I shall make this post a round-up of what’s been going on in my life since the last post!
Work – Post-trip depression has died down somewhat and work has been going fairly well. However, we had a meeting with the editor of our sister newspaper a couple of weeks back in which I felt extremely targeted and got quite upset (fighting back the tears). Since then, I’ve tried to make more effort, and haven’t had any complaints so hopefully things are going better. However, when talking with one of the other girls in the office about my issues, she said she also notices the mean way the editor talks to me and constantly criticizes me. So it’s not just in my head. Unfortunately, the editor is the managers’ darling so I don’t feel as though I can talk to her about it.
Gym – I have been really good since I’ve been back, going 5-6 times a week. It’s such a great release for me (especially when issues like the aforementioned are occurring).
Friends –Haven’t seen my Hastings besties for ageeeeeees which has been lame. Spending time with my friends here is always great. It’s good for the soul.
Music – For some reason lately I can’t get enough of Black and Yellow by Wiz Khalifa. It’s not a new tune but it’s just so good and it makes me dance. I also love everything by Miguel at the moment.
Movies – Recently I’ve watched Don Jon, The Wolf of Wall Street, and V for Vendetta. Would recommend the latter two. The first one is, well, interesting. I’ll leave it at that.
TV shows – Almost up to date with White Collar and have one more episode of Sherlock to go. Both are just so great. Suits and Game of Thrones are starting up again in not too long – YUSS. Also, I watched an episode of KUWTK a couple of days ago and was LOLing so much that I’ve now completed series one and two. Guilty pleasure.
Books – Finished Catch 22 finally! It only took me about 2 months haha. Actually thought it was a pretty good read once I was done with it. For the latter half of the book I was appreciating how funny and well written it was. Then read Animal Farm – so fantastic! Am now reading The Book Thief which is Ah-mazing so far. In the interim, I also spent the paperplus voucher I was given at Christmas and bought Gone Girl (soon to be a movie and I’d heard the book is great) and I Quit Sugar by Sarah Wilson which I finished the day I got it. Cutting out sugar is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time and having now read two books about sugar, it’s a main goal of mine.
Car – Argh. Discovered my car had a big oil leak which is going to cost far too much to get fixed. Going to take it for a second quote to see if it’s worth fixing. If not, new car time! Sad though, I liked this one L
Family – Haven’t seen them in quite some time and miss them all the time. Seeing my Dad and sister soon though as sister is moving to Palmy in two weekends! That will be cool. I was tasked with finding her a flat, which I did. I hope she likes it! (though I’m sure she will – it’s awesome). Can’t wait to see Dad as well. I’m taking the two of them out to my favourite Japanese restaurant when they’re down. Eeeeep!!
Garcon – Has been far too long since I’ve seen him. Texting has been good though, for the most part. Can’t wait to see him next. We have some stuff to figure out.
Time for a selfie? I think so...
Heh so attractive.

The Anti-Bucket List

So coming up with a Bucket List is pretty easy. So I thought I'd instead write a list of things I don't want to do in my life. Far more interesting, and far more difficult!

So here is a list of things I don't want to do in my life:
  • I will never go out with someone who doesn’t read books.
I love reading and books. They bring me so much pleasure, and I don’t understand people who don’t enjoy reading. Books and reading have always been a massive part of my life, so no future bf of mine will be a non-reader
  • I will never live alone.
I have watched too many scary movies in my lifetime to ever be able to live alone. All the squeaks and creaks would freak me out WAY too much. Plus, while I do like my alone time, I like being around people too much to ever be able to live alone. Not for me thanks.
  • I will never smoke or try hard drugs.
I think smoking is the foulest habit ever. And I will never try cocaine/heroin/meth or any of those really scary, harmful drugs. Delving in drugs is just stupid; I honestly don’t see the point. Nothing is gained.
  • I will never eat shark fin soup.
The way they make this is absolutely disgusting, and I would not eat it on principal. Glad to hear in the news recently that New Zealand is in the process of outlawing Shark-finning in our waters. Yay for NZ!

So that's all I could think of at this point, but I may revisit this list as things come to me. What's on your anti-bucket list, readers?

A fantastic read

I just finished a book that I can’t get out of my head. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. It’s a beautifully written novel about one man’s search for redemption, set in the backdrop of a turbulent Afghanistan (the shift from monarchy to Taliban rule). I think it is quite possibly the most poignant book I’ve ever read. I cannot fault it, it is just fantastic.
The crux of the novel is the protagonist’s search for atonement, after an event during his childhood had continuous repercussions on his life. But while this is the continuous theme running through the novel, the various relationships that are explored, along with the intersection of Afghanistan’s political situation, make for many layers to sink your teeth into.
This book is a lesson in the persistence of the past, of friendship, love and tension, the abuse of power and personal growth. There’s just so much to learn from this novel, so many ways the lessons apply and make us evaluate our own life. It’s a definite tear-jerker as well.
Because I think everyone needs to read this book (and also because I do not want this book review to become too gushy), I won’t say much else other than that I’ve read many great books in my life, but this one stands out considerably. Please read.

A completely boring browser history

Here are the websites I visit the most often:

Social
Facebook - Unfortunately, I'm addicted. Have to check it multiple times a day.
Blogger - To keep you all in the loop. So this is clearly very important. I love to write, so this is a great forum to do so on an informal basis.
Google Plus - To edit the photos I put on my blog.
Hotmail - For obvious reasons. All that fan mail must be answered.

Blogs
Here comes the sun - I love this blog unconditionally. It's just so beautifully done and the girl who writes it is a New Zealander so it has that local appeal. This blog is why I began blogging.
Nailed it NZ - My good friend Jessie's nail art site! She's amazingly talented and I always love to see her latest creations.

Shopping
Asos - So much range and so cheap! Free shipping too which is a massive drawcard.
The Book Depository - Same deal as above but with books. Have purchased quite a few titles from this site. It's marvellous. Truly.
1day - A one day sale site that sometimes has deals worth looking at. Often provides terrible temptation by offering mass quantities of chocolate and sweets.
Grab One - Seldom any decent deals on here but I check it regularly via email subscription. Did have a lovely high tea last week that was purchased from this site so it's not entirely useless.

Other
Project freeTV - To watch TV online.
Stuff - For news.
Buzzfeed - For hilarity in list form. Anyone who knows me knows that I am an avid list-writer and therefore can understand why this site has massive appeal for me.

Creating this list has made me realise just how boring of an internet existence I have. Please recommend some worthwhile sites for me to become addicted to. Please readers, help.

Non-fiction must reads

Not sure if I've really communicated on here how much of a fan of reading I am. But I most definitely am. Reading is, in my opinion, one of the best and most worthwhile pursuits on earth. Though I do admit I haven't done much of it (for leisure anyway) in the last few years whilst I've been at uni, I'm getting back into it again now and have re-discovered why I love it so much. I grew up with a love for reading and books, to which my lovely mother can attest. I was a complete and utter bookworm. I would read over 100 books a year, easy. I want to be like that again. Because, while I did entertain the notion that being a bookworm was 'geeky' and 'uncool' for a while there, I now think that people who read are far more attractive than people who don't. To be able to have a decent conversation with someone about books is a rare gem these days, and when it happens, it's like an instant attraction.

Anyway....I tend to read fiction, just because that's what I've always enjoyed. But I want to get into reading more non-fiction. Not only is it informative (therefore making you smarter), but it can be super interesting!!  Here are my favourite non-fiction books to date:

In Cold Blood - Truman Capote
An absolutely brilliant read that details the 1959 homicide of a family in Kansas. Capote actually befriended the killers and we get an interesting insight into their minds and how they cope in prison awaiting death. This book is excellent, highly recommended.

The Innocent Man - John Gisham
Another tragic but brilliant book. I read this when I was 14 and it has stuck with me ever since. It's a poignant tale of gross injustice, written by an excellent author. Grisham doesn't usually write non-fiction, but he proves in this book that his talent for writing is not limited to fiction. Read it.

The Sweet Poison Quit Plan - David Gillespie
I read this book recently because I saw it at my sister's flat one day and was intrigued. I never read self-help/diet books so this was different for me. I found it really interesting though, and it shocked me a bit (in a good way). It's pretty much about how bad sugar is for you, and why we need to cut it out of our diets. Oh and the author lost 40kg just from cutting out sugar. Wow. A book I needed to read.

Kitchen Confidential - Anthony Bourdain
I've always been interested in cheffing (ask anyone who grew up with me) so this book appealed. I also enjoy watching Anthony Bourdain's shows on TV so it doubly appealed. It's written exactly the way that Bourdain speaks, and gives a raw insight into the hard life of a chef. It's a fascinating read about the underbelly of the kitchen industry, and all of it's horrors.

Open - Andre Agassi
Also am a fan of tennis, and this guy. This book was well written and made me feel quite sorry for Andre. His father was a pushy parent who pressured him into going far with Tennis. Yet while I felt sympathy for Andre, I also got slightly annoyed at his selfishness. I find it interesting to read about well-known people and get to know a bit of what they're really like. Enjoyed this read.

Can you recommend any other great non-fiction reads?
On a side note, just received my copy of The Great Gatsby from The Book Depository! Yuss! When I finish the book I'm currently reading, that's me.

Yay & Nay

Yay - It is almost Friday!!
Nay - I just watched the season 3 finale of Game of Thrones. Waiting for season 4 is going to be tough.
Yay - Got to see my best friend a couple of weekends back, and had such an amazing time with her.
Nay - Realised how much I miss her and now crave her company even more.
Yay - Have been to the gym 3 times already this week, on track for 6 times this week!
Nay - Made a delicious (and semi fancy) meal for the flat tonight and there ended up only being 2 of us there to eat it (out of 5 of us).
Yay - The All Blacks have started up their season again, Saturday night rugby = good times.
Nay - Was fully keen to do the Tough guy and gal challenge with the flatties but then realised I have work on that day. Lame!
Yay - Only one month before I can get my hair done again, hopefully for the last time!!
Nay - A whole month before I can get my hair done again. waaaaa.
Yay - Getting back into reading again, and it is good. So good.
Nay - The weather here lately has meant that I pretty much permanently have my clothes horse up in my room. This means frequently walking into it = bruises = not ideal.
Yay - Have been able to save money again. This is excellent and alleviates a bit of stress from my life.
Nay - Have to pay my car rego tomorrow :(
Yay - Am going overseas at the end of this year! wooop!
Nay - Keep seeing so many lovely things I want to buy. Sometimes I wish I was a millionaire. Then I realise that material things are pretty worthless in the grand scheme of things.
Yay - Get free movies at both Downtown Cinema and Cinema Gold here in Palmy, so I can write reviews for the paper. Ideal for the movie lover that I am.
Nay - I was fully going to write like three posts tonight, then somehow managed to waste time doing nothing at all. As I do. Seriously so bad at that!

And now it is late, and I must rest my tired eyes. I leave you with this:

Stay Rad readers

The new resolutions

I know it's kinda cliched to write out resolutions these days but I don't really care, imma do it anyway:

1) Keep up an excellent exercise routine.
2) Get into good eating habits! 3 meals a day, lots of fruit and veges and less sugar :)
3) Find a good career-relevant job!
4) Read more!! Only read 6 books for leisure in 2012. Disgusting.
5) Keep up the blog.

That's all I can think of at the moment but five is a good number I think. 2012 was a roller-coaster year, but I definitely look back at it fondly, as there were many many great moments :)
I'm looking forward to the challenges that 2013 brings!!

Currently in Dale's world...

Firstly, apologies for the depressing post prior to this one. I had a short while of feeling sad re le garcon over the weekend. However that didn't last long and I am back to my happy self again :) Actually, life is pretty sweet atm!! Hitting the gym lots, not having to study (and hence being able to troll the net, watch tv shows and movies and read etc etc), getting lots of hours at work, hanging with friends...it's great!!

I got a new smartphone today (no not an iphone unfortunately...) and have spent a great deal of today figuring it out, getting apps and all that jazz. It's pretty awesome I must say.

Currently in Dale's world...

I'm listening to: Rockin' with you by Chris Rene
I'm reading: Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins...finally...
I'm missing: Jess & Jo!! Not able to see them at all this summer waaaaa :'(
I'm restraining from buying: Nothing at this moment of time. Most unusual for me.
I'm craving: Mum's tomato soup. Salmon. The non-alcoholic cocktails from The Flying Burrito Brothers.
I'm watching: Gilmore Girls season 4. Game of Thrones season 1.
I'm wondering: What is the meaning of life? (lol jac...)
I'm crushing on: Tom Hardy.
I'm about to: Play a logo quiz on ma phone. fun.
I'm resolving to: Eat healthier!
I'm liking: the sweet irony and truth of the following picture...

TPOBAW - Quotes

The Perks of being a Wallflower - I can't wait to see this movie or read the book. Some beautiful quotes from it:

And of course, 'we accept the love we think we deserve'. Stephen Chbosky evidently has a brilliant mind.
I love all of these quotes.

Ten random truths

1) I've seen the movie Ted twice.
2) I went ice skating last night with my flatmate. He almost fell multiple times. I didn't. yuss.
3) I'm thinking of going to Thailand or Korea this summer.
4) I'm currently reading Catching Fire, book 2 of the Hunger Games trilogy.
5) I'm currently crushing on Tom Hardy. He has copious amounts of swagg.
6) I wonder how important a person has to be before they are considered assassinated rather than murdered?
7) My flatmate let me create his character on Skyrim last night. I made her real dirty with lots of war paint. fun.
8) I watched Life is Beautiful recently. It was beautiful.
9) On Tuesday night I was told something by someone which made me feel good.
10) I bought some new heels recently. Because they are 6-inch, when I wear them I will be 6 foot tall. oosh.

The ones on the left are the ones I bought. Very cool.
Peace.

A blissful day

I had such a lovely day yesterday. It started off in the best way possible, with a sleep-in, then comprised an hour long pump class, trolling the internet, a small amount of uni work, a lovely chat with the parentals and then, the best part of all, leisure reading! My golly I have missed reading things that I want to read. My weeks have been filled with academic readings such as Diachronic studies of linguistic landscapes in Ukraine and Gendered and Racialized discourses of national identity that take so much brainpower to internally translate into understandable English in order to understand what the heck it is the author is actually saying. So reading a book that I actually wanted to read was just fabulous. This book was Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons, which I had started at the beginning of the year but had to put down on account of the aforementioned readings.

I finished the book off in the evening and didn't really think much of it. It was just ok, but nevertheless it was delightful to be reading again and I plan on doing  much more of this during the mid-year break :) I have since begun a book that my flatmate lent me, Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain which is so far proving hard to put down.

A snack I made for myself during yesterday's blissful period of reading..

Cheese and tomato with basil pesto, capsicum and cracked pepper on meal mates....Yum.

And this is what I made myself for dinner...

Toasted turkish bread topped with herbed cream cheese, spinach, tomato, cheese, baked garlic field mushroom, capsicum and cracked pepper. Delish.
Hope you are all having a fab weekend :)

Miss Austen

So today I finished and handed in my final assignment for this half of the semester. It was a 2000 word essay discussing the representation and ideologies relating to gender in the 1975 film The Stepford Wives (a movie exponentially better than its remake). To sum up my argument: the film critiques patriarchy and the ideology of female domesticity...blah blah blah...men suck.

Reading so much feminist rhetoric lately has actually been really interesting and has made me come to terms with my own views. Something that stuck out to me was a quote that I came across:
"Pictures of perfection make me sick and wicked" - Jane Austen (1817)
This stuck out to me not only because I love Jane Austen's works, but also because it shows how she had to contend with unrealistic media images even back in her time, and that she's not afraid to articulate how such images made her feel.
And on the subject of Jane Austen quotes....
"I believe I drank too much wine last night at Hurstbourne; I know not how else to account for the shaking of my hand to-day. You will kindly make allowance therefore for any indistinctness of writing, by attributing it to this venial error." - Jane Austen (1800)
^^ This quote of hers makes me laugh.
"My idea of good company is the company of clever, well-informed people who have a great deal of conversation; that is what I call good company" - Jane Austen (1816)
Agreeeeeeeeed!! This quote makes me like her even morebet she woulda been a freakn cool chick. My theory is that Elizabeth Bennett from Pride & Prejudice is based on Austen herself, as reading through her quotes gives a real impression of the type of person she was; witty, independent, headstrong (Just like Lizzie).

Thank you, Miss Austen, for your legacy. I admire you greatly.

Book therapy

Don't you just love the deliciousness of sitting down in the sun, with a cold drink and a good book? This is one of my favourite things to do, and I could spend hours doing it (though would turn bright red if I did). It's a great way to de-stress. I went to the annual Lions Book Sale in Hastings last weekend and got ten books, so I have plenty of reading material for summer. I manage to pick up some great bargains at the sale every year, and this year was no exception. I got three which are bestsellers worth about $25 each from a book store, as well as others from favourite authors. Here's what I picked up:

Am currently reading the one at the top - Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones. Pretty good so far! And of course, I couldn't resist buying the latest issue of Frankie when I was in town, and as per usual, it is a glorious issue.

Also, while I was catching up on my favourite blogs I discovered I won a giveaway! Totally made my day! It was from this blog which is aaaaaaaamazing, and by a fellow New Zealander :) See what I won here. Very exciting as I'm relatively new to the blogosphere and haven't ever won anything from a blog before! Choice!

p.s. apologies for not blogging for some time. I've been working insane hours lately and haven't had much time, but I will try to improve :)

Literature Love

IN MEMORIAM KURT VONNEGUT Jr.

Am loving being back in Hawke's Bay so far. Had a super weekend and a great start to the week thus far. My days have been as follows:
Friday - pack up, drive home, catch up with GPs, dinner, movie with sister (Paranormal Activity 2), bed
Saturday - gym with my buddy again (yay!), another movie with sister (All Good Things), shoe shopping, amazing turkish dinner with the bestie, movie in napier with the bestie's bf and friends (The Inbetweeners), bed
Sunday - sleeeeeeep in, reading of book, cooking of dinner, eating of dinner, watching of movie (The Ghost writer), chat to father, bed.

And today I started work which went well. Felt like I'd never left. And it made me happy that the dog at work remembered me. And that I remember how to make coffee's after not doing it for so long :)

But ohemgee these holidays i am soooooooo looking forward to delving into reading for leisure, somthing I haven't been able to do much of this year. I think I've read maybe 10 leisure books this year?! Hardly any. Especially considering I used to easily read a hundred. Im not this big book nerd though, don't get me wrong, but I love to curl up and read. This summer I am aiming to read at least another 10, and want to finally read Catch 22. What makes it even more exciting is that this coming weekend is the annual Lion's book sale which is one of the highlights of my year! It's this hugely popular second hand book sale that I attend every year and come away with some stunning finds. Dad is coming down for the weekend so will be coming with me and I cannot wait!

p.s. I have never read anything by Kurt Vonnegut who features in the above pic, I just like the pic!

Hope you are all having a great week :)

Joining the blogosphere...

During my first year of university, I met some very cool people and was introduced to the wonderful world of blogging. I started reading a few blogs on a regular basis and quickly got addicted! It's funny how the goings-on in other people's lives can be so fascinating.
So, even though no-one is likely to read this blog, I wanted to give it a go, see how everything works. Coming up with a blog name was difficult, but I finally decided on a U2 song quote. I like it.

Handed a big assignment in today, so I'm taking the night off from uni work. I'm gonna snuggle up and read some Sherlock Holmes :)
